2 Men on Terror Watchlist Caught Crossing Southern Border

From The Daily Signal.com (April 6):

Two men from Yemen were apprehended and found to be on the FBI’s terrorism watchlist after illegally crossing the southern border in January and March, Customs and Border Protection announced Monday.

CBP agents arrested the men near the Calexico Port of Entry in Southern California, according to the agency. Both of the men were encountered illegally entering the U.S. after dusk.

A 26-year-old Yemen national was apprehended at 11:30 p.m. on March 30 after illegally entering the U.S., according to CBP. Officials encountered the man around 2 miles from the Calexico Port of Entry and he was taken to the El Centro Processing Center for immigration and criminal history screening.

Officials found the man listed on the FBI’s Terrorism Screening Database and the no-fly list during processing, according to CBP. The man remains in federal custody pending removal from the U.S.

“Our border security efforts are layered and include multiple levels of rigorous screening that allow us to detect and prevent people who pose national security or public safety risks from entering the United States,” CBP spokesperson Justin Long Told the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“DHS works with our international partners to share intelligence and other information, including to prevent individuals on the terrorist watchlist from entering the United States.”

“CBP adjudicates individuals encountered at and between our ports of entry against several classified and unclassified databases to determine if they pose a threat to national security, consistent with the law,” Long told The Daily Caller News Foundation.

“While encounters of known and suspected terrorists at our borders are very uncommon, they underscore the importance of the critical work our agents carry out on a daily basis to vet all individuals encountered at our borders,” Long said. [read more]

And the crazy Left wants an open border. Really? Just plain stupid. Good thing the border patrol caught those two men.

If You Smash Capitalism, You Can’t ‘Build Back Better’

From The Daily Signal.com (Dec. 1):

America is the most prosperous nation on Earth. But equality campaigners of today—armed with social justice rhetoric—insist that if a system doesn’t bring identical prosperity to every person, it must be torn down and replaced.

Thus, the raging strategy of the left seemingly championed by Joe Biden and Kamala Harris: Burn, riot, crush, and destroy; then magnanimously promise to “Build Back Better.”

But here’s the rub: Absolute equality can’t be achieved by any system as long as human beings are allowed to exercise free will. This is a fact we must face.

Freedom Allows ‘Inequality’

Freedom allows people to be lackluster or magnificent, to fail miserably and to succeed fantastically. Freedom allows risk-taking and doesn’t exempt people from the consequences of their choices.

In other words, freedom allows inequality. If this is so, then is freedom worth all the ink and sweat and blood that has been spilled for it over the centuries?

For those whose top priority is equality, freedom is too alarming to risk. For those whose top priority is prosperity, freedom is critical. Manufacturing equality by way of socialist policies requires revoking freedom and usurping private property.

Theoretical socialism (or state-managed wealth redistribution) does not work in the real world because even if you give everybody the same portions of the same stuff, people will exercise their free will to use or abuse their stuff differently, which leads to more dreaded “inequality.”

Since free will cannot be fully subdued, it wreaks havoc on calculated equality initiatives that promise “equality for all.” Programs promising “wealth for all,” “education for all,” or anything “for all” should be seen for the freedom-sucking black holes they are.

Programs and policies like this abound because they sound good: No Child Left Behind, health care for all, housing for all, etc. But they never seem to work.

What does work is free-market capitalism. As highlighted in “The Pursuit,” a film produced by the American Enterprise Institute, capitalism has helped nearly 2 billion people pull themselves out of extreme poverty in the past three decades. Poverty rates in India have dropped dramatically since the adoption of capitalistic practices.

But despite these astounding successes, it still isn’t good enough for equality zealots such as Biden and Harris, who insist that any system that achieves anything less than absolute equality must be torn down and “built back better.” This is an impossible standard that will end in destruction rather than production. Putin signs law allowing him 2 more terms as Russia’s leader

From AP News.com (April 5):

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday signed a law allowing him to potentially hold onto power until 2036, a move that formalizes constitutional changes endorsed in a vote last year.

The July 1 constitutional vote included a provision that reset Putin’s previous term limits, allowing him to run for president two more times. The change was rubber-stamped by the Kremlin-controlled legislature and the relevant law signed by Putin was posted Monday on an official portal of legal information.

The 68-year-old Russian president, who has been in power for more than two decades — longer than any other Kremlin leader since Soviet dictator Josef Stalin — said he would decide later whether to run again in 2024 when his current six-year term ends.

He has argued that resetting the term count was necessary to keep his lieutenants focused on their work instead of “darting their eyes in search for possible successors.”

The constitutional amendments also emphasized the primacy of Russian law over international norms, outlawed same-sex marriages and mentioned “a belief in God” as a core value. Nearly 78% of voters approved the constitutional amendments during the balloting that lasted for a week and concluded on July 1. Turnout was 68%. [read more]

Interesting. Compared to the communist leader of China who made himself a lifetime dictator, what Putin did isn’t that bad. Not saying that being a dictator is good thing. Secretly (or maybe not so secretly) making themselves a lifetime dictator is what the Left wants to do. After all, who needs the stupid unenlightened masses to vote for a president.

Chinese Christians Held in Secretive Brainwashing Camps: Sources

From RFA.org (April 1):

Authorities in China are detaining Christians in secretive, mobile "transformation" facilities to make them renounce their faith, RFA has
learned.

A member of a Christian "house church" in the southwestern province of Sichuan who asked to be identified by a pseudonym Li Yuese said he was held in a facility run by the ruling Chinese Communist Party (CCP)'s United Front Work Department, working in tandem with the state security police, for 10 months after a raid on his church in 2018.

"It was a mobile facility, that could just set up in some basement somewhere," Li said. "It was staffed by people from several different government departments."

"It had its own (CCP) political and legal affairs committee working group, and they mainly target Christians who are members of house churches," he said.

The Chinese Communist Party, which embraces atheism, exercises tight controls over any form of religious practice among its citizens.

State security police and religious affairs bureau officials frequently raid unofficial "house churches" that aren't members of the CCP-backed Three-Self Patriotic Association, although member churches have also been targeted at times.

The CCP under Xi Jinping regards Christianity as a dangerous foreign import, with party documents warning against the "infiltration of Western hostile forces" in the form of religion. [read more]

TROUBLING MESSAGE Capitol suspect Noah Green sent worrying text before attack and posted ‘US gov is #1 enemy of Black people’

From the-sun.com (April 3):

CAPITOL suspect Noah Green dubbed the US government the "#1 enemy of Black people" before he allegedly rammed a car into a barricade and killed a cop.

Green, 25, once a promising college football star, was shot dead after he allegedly ploughed his Nissan Altima into a Capitol security cordon in Washington DC on Friday.

The former athlete also sent a concerning text message to his brother Brendan the day before the horrific attack.

Green reportedly wrote: "I'm sorry but I'm just going to go and live and be homeless. Thank you for everything that you've done.

"I looked up to you when I was a kid. You inspired me a lot."

Brendan - one of Green's nine siblings - moved his brother in with him after he grew concerned about his drug abuse and mental health.

The two lived together in an apartment in Virginia, with Green moving in two weeks ago after spending some time in Indianapolis.

His brother told The Washington Post that Green suffered hallucinations, heart palpitations, headaches and suicidal thoughts. [read more]

Diamond Nuclear Battery: Will It Last Up To 28,000 Years?

From Science Times.com (Mar. 31):

Nano Diamond Battery (NDB) is a "high-power diamond-based alpha, beta, and neutron voltaic battery" that can provide devices with "life-long and renewable energy."

NDB is working on a low-power diamond battery for deep space missions. They're also working on a diamond battery for mobile phones and consumer electronics that would last for nine years.

The company began developing its battery in 2012 and anticipates having a working product by 2023.

How Does it Work?

According to Popular Mechanics, diamonds are excellent at conducting heat, and micro-sized diamonds move heat away from radioactive isotope materials to the point where electricity is generated.

The NDB battery concept is similar to the first known DNV battery concept, which used waste graphite from a graphite-cooled nuclear reactor.

The device could last thousands of years thanks to radioactively contaminated graphite and heat-conducting diamonds. The difference with NDB's concept is that it employs multiple layers of diamond and radioactive waste panels to generate more energy.

Though the long battery life is certainly a plus, each battery cell produces a negligible amount of energy, necessitating using a large number of cells to power regular and larger devices.

The battery will be encased in layers of paneled nano-diamonds to absorb the energy emitted by the isotopes.

Because isotopes have thousands-year half-lives and diamonds are excellent heat conductors, the battery will continue to emit energy without needing to be recharged.

Dr. Nima Golsharifi, co-founder and CEO of NDB, told Future Net Zero in October 2020 that the battery would have two benefits. The first step is to turn nuclear waste into something useful. The second is a timer that could last hundreds of lifetimes. [read more]

We Can’t Control COVID (Or Much of Anything Else)

From Break Point.org:

In early March, the University of California San Francisco held a panel discussion of infectious disease specialists on a new virus that had, at that point, killed 41 Americans. These experts not only estimated that 60 to 70 percent of America’s population would eventually contract the virus, but that our best attempts to contain it, either through lockdowns or contact tracing, would be, in their words, “basically futile.”

Today, nine months later, the predictions of this particular panel of experts have turned out like most other COVID-19 predictions: right on some things, wrong on others. It’s not clear just how effective all of the quarantining, lock-downing, social distancing, and masking has been in reducing the number of infections, or why, despite more data, our assumptions about COVID-19 remain largely unchanged. And, of course, we’ve yet to reckon with the economic, educational, and mental health consequences of the policy paths we’ve chosen.

What is clear, more clear than ever in fact, are the base set of assumptions we now operate from as Westerners and Americans. Catastrophes like COVID always reveal worldview. To borrow a phrase philosopher Craig Gay uses in his book The Way of the Modern World, we are “practical atheists.” A subtle, operational-level form of secularism, practical atheism is not necessarily to believe that God does not exist. Rather, it’s to live as if God does not exist.

Professor Gay identifies two features of a culture operating from a deeply engrained practical atheism. First, there is an illusion of control. If there is no Higher Power determining the course of human events or judging the morality of our actions, the world is a place for us to make and remake according to our wishes. Grand leaps in science, medicine, and technology only deepen the faith we put in ourselves.

At the heart of our illusions of control is the assumption that world is totally understandable. We actually believe, Professor Gay says, not only that we can “comprehend reality in its totality,” but that “we are capable of rendering it stable and predictable.” In other words, we will ultimately make the world “work for us.”

That’s a really attractive proposition, of course. However, what happens when we face something beyond our understanding, something that is an existential threat to the “convenient fiction” of our control? Like a global pandemic? The answer can be seen in how so many U.S. governors approached last week’s Thanksgiving holiday: travel restrictions and curfews, bans on indoor gatherings, shaming even the idea of family gatherings for everyone, not just those at higher risk. The governor of my home state of Colorado said that gathering with family for Thanksgiving was like “putting a loaded pistol to Grandma’s head.”

How quickly we went from the “we acknowledge we can’t control this” of the UCSF panel of experts to the “we absolutely can and will control this” of elected officials. The shift from “most of us are going to get sick but let’s care for and protect the vulnerable” to “everyone must avoid getting sick at all costs” is a significant one. Now, if anyone contracts COVID, it’s not because it’s a novel virus we don’t understand, but because someone failed. Practical atheists want control. When control is lost, someone is to blame. Study declares AOC one of the least effective members of Congress

From NY Post.com (April 3):

She’s the queen of Twitter — but less successful at lawmaking.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was among the least effective members of the last Congress according to a new survey from the nonpartisan Center for Effective Lawmaking — a joint project of Vanderbilt University and the University of Virginia.

AOC introduced a total of 21 bills which the center defined as “substantive” — but that is where the story ends. Her legislation received no action in committees, no floor votes, and none ever became law, according to the center, which takes its data from Congress.gov.

“She introduced a lot of bills, but she was not successful at having them receive any sort of action in committee or beyond committee and if they can’t get through committee they cannot pass the House,” Alan Wiseman, a Vanderbilt political scientist and co-director of the center, told The Post.

“It’s clear that she was trying to get her legislative agenda moving and engage with the lawmaking process,” Wiseman added “But she wasn’t as successful as some other members were — even among [other] freshmen — at getting people to pay attention to her legislation.”

When looking at the legislative effectiveness of all congressional Democrats, AOC was ranked 230th out of 240 Democrats. Among the 19 Dem lawmakers from New York state, she ranked dead last. [read more]

Dr. Fauci’s promotion of gain of function research may have contributed to COVID-19 pandemic

From National Security.news (June 29):

There remains little doubt that the novel coronavirus originated at the Wuhan Institute of Virology, although no one can say for certain if its release was intentional or not. However, it’s not just the Chinese researchers at the lab who are to blame for the disease; some experts are pointing out that National institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Director Anthony Fauci’s promotion of a dangerous type of research could have played a role.

That’s because, as Matthew Cullinan Hoffman points out on Life Site News, much of the research carried out at the Wuhan Institute of Virology was funded, advocated and defended by leadership of the U.S. National Institutes of Health and the U.S. Agency for International Development, along with the World Health Organization and several American universities.

The lab carries out a dangerous type of research known as “gain of function,” which involves scientists manipulating viruses in the lab in order to examine their potential to infect humans. It is highly risky in the sense that an accidental release could spur a pandemic, which may be precisely what we are seeing right now.

In 2019, the National Institutes of Health, with backing from the NIAID, committed to spending $3.7 million over the course of six years for research, some of which was the gain of function variety. This came on top of a different $3.7 million, five-year project that involved collecting bat coronaviruses and studying them. The first program funded virologist Shi Zheng-Li and other researchers at the Wuhan Lab and came to a close last year.

Dr. Fauci also came under fire when he defended a risky gain of function research project on bird flu viruses that involved passing wild viruses through live animals until they mutated into a type that could potentially pose a pandemic threat. The scientists involved took a virus that had been poorly transmitted through humans and made it into a highly transmissible one.

More than 200 scientists joined a call for the risky work to be stopped because of the potential of a lab accident creating a pandemic, but Dr. Fauci felt that it was a useful project and defended it. [read more]

Scientists built a perfectly self-replicating synthetic cell

From Live Science.com (April):

Scientists have crafted a single-celled synthetic organism that divides and multiplies just like the real thing. The advancement could someday help researchers to build miniscule computers and tiny drug-producing factories, all out of synthesized cells.

Of course, that future likely won't be realized for many years to come.

"There's just so many ways in which this coming century of biology could potentially change our daily lives for the better," said senior author Elizabeth Strychalski, leader of the Cellular Engineering Group at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). For example, Strychalski and her colleagues plan to engineer living sensors that can take measurements from their surrounding environments, monitoring the acidity, temperature and oxygen levels nearby.

These sensor cells could also be manufactured to produce specific products — namely medicines — and could potentially be placed inside the human body itself. "One vision is that when the cell senses a disease state, then it can make that therapeutic, and when a disease state is longer there, they could stop making that therapeutic," Strychalski said. Other cells could be cultured in the lab and used to efficiently produce food and fuel products, while still others could be made to perform computational functions at a molecular scale, she added. Biden administration working with companies to develop 'vaccine passports' to track vaccinated Americans

From The Blaze.com (Mar. 28):

The Biden administration has partnered with companies to develop a "vaccine passport," which would track Americans who have been vaccinated for COVID-19, and give them access to businesses, events, and travel.

"The Biden administration and private companies are working to develop a standard way of handling credentials — often referred to as 'vaccine passports' — that would allow Americans to prove they have been vaccinated against the novel coronavirus as businesses try to reopen," the Washington Post reported on Sunday.

"The effort has gained momentum amid President Joe Biden's pledge that the nation will start to regain normalcy this summer and with a growing number of companies — from cruise lines to sports teams - saying they will require proof of vaccination before opening their doors again," the report stated.

"The administration's initiative has been driven largely by arms of the Department of Health and Human Services, including an office devoted to health information technology, said five officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss the effort," the report claimed.

The report revealed that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will assist with the vaccine passport rollout. The Washington Post claimed the CDC is already working with the World Health Organization in developing "digital vaccination certificates." [read more]

A Demon's Guide to the Election

From Break Point.org:

In The Screwtape Letters, C.S. Lewis imagines how an experienced demonic operative might advise a younger, less experienced understudy in the intricacies of counter-Christian spiritual warfare. In one passage especially relevant right now, Lewis describes how politics could be used to tempt and thwart a Christ-follower. The setting is World War II Britain. “Uncle Screwtape” says it this way:

“Let [your patient] begin by treating … Patriotism or Pacifism as part of his religion. Then let him, under the influence of partisan spirit, come to regard it as the most important part. Then quietly and gradually nurse him on to the stage at which the religion becomes merely part of the ‘cause,’ in which Christianity is valued chiefly because of the excellent arguments it can produce in favour of the British war-effort or of Pacifism."

Note the progression: first, politics is part of religion. Then, politics is the most important part of religion. Then, religion becomes part of politics. It’s genius.

To be clear, Lewis never advises that Christians ought to abandon political engagement or political causes. He does, however, warn just how easily the enemy can use political engagement to confuse what are ends and what are means. Or, to use language we often employ at the Colson Center, when it comes politics, especially the high-stakes kind that defines the current climate, American Christians have a history of losing the Story in the chaos of the moment.

America is worth protecting and preserving, and Christians should always side with what is good, even if flawed. We have much to steward, including the historic recognition of God-given rights, a system of government designed to protect those rights, a Constitution that prioritizes our allegiance to God over any allegiance to the state, and a history of men and women whom God used, within the framework of that freedom, to spark revival, to confront our national sins, to secure civil rights, to found Christian institutions, and to send missionaries around the world.

However, as we rightly acknowledge the ways in which America has been a blessing for the Church, we can never confuse one for the other. It is the Church whose future is secure. It is to the Head of the Church that our allegiance ultimately and exclusively belongs. The Kingdom of God is the end of all of human history. It, and only it, can ever claim our highest loyalties. Supreme Court Weighs Allowing Police To Enter Homes Without A Warrant For ‘Caretaking’

From Forbes.com (Mar. 24):

The U.S. Supreme Court considered Wednesday whether it’s permissible under the Fourth Amendment for police officers to enter people’s homes without a warrant in limited circumstances under a “community caretaking” exception, which the Biden administration has backed but has provoked objections from civil rights groups.

The Supreme Court heard arguments Wednesday in Caniglia v. Strom, which considered whether police acted lawfully by entering a man’s home and removing his firearms without a warrant after he had expressed thoughts of suicide and was taken to the hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

The justification for doing so was a “community caretaking” exception allowing entry in cases where doing so benefits the public interest, which has traditionally applied to incidents regarding vehicles but not in homes, as was the case here.

Two lower courts sided with the police officers, whose attorneys argued to the Supreme Court, “The Fourth Amendment does not prohibit law enforcement officers from diffusing a volatile situation in a home to protect the residents or others.”

The Department of Justice filed an amicus brief in February saying it agreed the police officers should have been allowed to enter the home without a warrant in this case, and more broadly when their actions are “objectively grounded in a non-investigatory public interest, such as health or safety.” [read more]

Michael Flynn’s Family Files $75 Million Defamation Lawsuit Against CNN

From Daily Wire.com (Mar. 26):

Two of former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s relatives filed a $75 million defamation lawsuit against CNN on Thursday.

Flynn’s brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Leslie Flynn, sued the network in U.S. District Court in New York City for allegedly portraying them and their family as supporters of QAnon, an online conspiracy theory. The Flynns claimed that CNN deceptively edited footage in a Feb. 4 segment on the conspiracy to implicate the Flynn family, according to the Daily Beast. As the outlet reports:

The segment largely shows footage of a meeting of QAnon supporters, including the photogenic icon of the Capitol riot known as the QAnon Shaman, but also briefly shows video tweeted by Michael Flynn of a July 4th gathering of his extended family. In the video, the Flynns recite a pledge to the U.S. constitution and end it with “Where we go one, we go all,” a slogan so frequently used by QAnon adherents it appears as the abbreviation WWG1WGA on movement merchandise. Jack and Leslie Flynn contend, however, that the slogan is unrelated to the movement and that they are “not followers or supporters of any extremist or terrorist groups, including QAnon,” despite being allegedly inaccurately portrayed as such.

Secret Service Intervened In Hunter Biden Gun Incident; Hunter May Have Lied On Background Check Form, Report Says

From Daily Wire.com (Mar. 25):

Another scandal involving President Joe Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, broke on Thursday morning when a new report outlined allegations that the Secret Service intervened in a firearm-related incident a few years ago.

The report comes after Hunter Biden revealed in December that he was under federal criminal investigation over matters related to his taxes and overseas business dealings.

The new allegations facing Hunter Biden stem from an October 2018 incident between Hunter Biden and Hallie Biden, the wife of Hunter Biden’s deceased brother, Beau Biden. Hunter Biden dated his brother’s widow and later fathered a child with a stripper while he was living with Hallie Biden.

Hallie Biden allegedly took Hunter Biden’s gun and threw it in a trash can behind a grocery store, which prompted an investigation from law enforcement officials who were concerned because the trash can was close to a high school. Hallie Biden later returned to retrieve the firearm only to discover it was missing.

“Secret Service agents approached the owner of the store where Hunter bought the gun and asked to take the paperwork involving the sale, according to two people, one of whom has firsthand knowledge of the episode and the other was briefed by a Secret Service agent after the fact,” Politico reported. “The gun store owner refused to supply the paperwork, suspecting that the Secret Service officers wanted to hide Hunter’s ownership of the missing gun in case it were to be involved in a crime, the two people said. The owner, Ron Palmieri, later turned over the papers to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, which oversees federal gun laws.” [read more]

FBI searches the Syrian-born Boulder gunman's $800K family home

From Daily Mail.co.uk (Mar. 24):

Investigators were seen searching the $800,000 Colorado home of the King Soopers gunman on Tuesday as more of his Facebook rants are revealed and a police report shows that he 'beat up a teen bully who called him a terrorist' in 2017.

Agents of the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrived at the residence of Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, who was named by police earlier in the day as the man who shot dead 10 people at the Boulder grocery store on Monday afternoon. The grocery store is about 30 miles from his Arvada home.

Alissa was pictured leaving the store handcuffed and bloody following the rampage and was booked into the Boulder County Jail today after being released from hospital.

Neighbors said police arrived at the five-bedroom family home at around 3pm and left the property an hour and a half later.

DailyMail.com photos show CBI investigators and police touring the quiet suburban street, and speaking to neighbors.

A woman at the family home - thought to be Alissa's mother - threatened to call the police on a DailyMail.com reporter and said the family are not planning to speak to the media.

The Real Cost of Wind and Solar

From American Thinker.com (Sept. 29):

The main problem with either wind or solar is that they generate electricity erratically, depending on the wind or sunshine. In contrast, a fossil-fuel plant can generate electricity predictably upon request. Blackouts are very expensive for society, so grid operators and designers go to a lot of trouble to make sure that blackouts are rare. The electrical grid should have spare capacity sufficient to meet the largest demand peaks even when some plants are out of commission.  Plants in spinning reserve status stand by ready to take over if a plant trips (breaks down). Injecting erratic electricity into the grid means that other plants have to seesaw output to balance the ups and downs of wind or solar.

Adding wind or solar to a grid does not mean that existing fossil fuel plants can be retired. Often, neither wind nor solar is working and at those times a full complement of fossil fuel plants, or sometimes nuclear or hydro plants, must be available. Both wind and solar have pronounced seasonality. During low output times, as for summer wind, the fossil-fuel plants are carrying more of the load. Of course, solar stops working as the sun sets.

Wind behaves erratically hour to hour. Even though the Texas 18,000-megawatt system has thousands of turbines spread over a wide area, the net output is erratic changing by thousands of megawatts in a single hour. These shifts must be balanced by fossil-fuel plants slewing their output up and down to compensate and keep load matched to generation.

Even very sunny southwest cities have 50 or more cloudy days per year, stopping or reducing solar generation. Wind turbines are very sensitive to wind speed. A 10% change in wind speed will change power output by 30%, amplifying the erratic nature of wind.

The big picture is that when wind or solar is added to a grid it is supplemental power. No coal or gas plants are eliminated. Those plants have to stay in place to handle periods when wind and solar are not producing electricity. This does not stop claims that wind or solar is replacing fossil fuel, but it is fuel that is replaced, not fossil-fuel plants. When wind or solar is producing, the fossil fuel plants are throttled back and they use less fuel. If, for example, a coal plant was closed when wind was added to the grid, the safety margin would be compromised. [read more]

Wind and solar are worshiped as the savior of energy by the Left. They are not saviors. Like the article says they are inconsistent. There is never going to be solar powered airplane for that reason.

BREAKING EXCLUSIVE: Location of Origin of COVID-19 Pandemic Identified – Between Two of China’s Biological Warfare Facilities in Wuhan

From The Gateway Pundit.com (Mar. 24):

According to China’s own data, the original hot spot for COVID-19 infections occurred in a residential area in the four miles between the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the Biological Preparations Institute of the China Biology Technology Group Corporation.

Both of those institutions have been associated with China’s biological warfare program and, prior to and since the onset of the pandemic, they have collaborated on vaccine development.

For months after the start of the pandemic in December 2019, China flooded the scientific literature with subtle and sometimes not so subtle messages supporting its narrative that COVID-19 is a naturally-occurring disease that “jumped” from animals to humans in the Wuhan seafood market.

On May 26, 2020, the Wall Street Journal reported that China was finally forced to admit that COVID-19 did not originate in the Wuhan seafood market, a theory now totally discredited, even by the Chinese Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Nevertheless, China’s attempts to cover-up the origin of COVID-19 continue.

Even as recently as February of this year, China has refused to give raw data on early COVID-19 cases to a World Health Organization (WHO) team probing the origins of the pandemic.

The WHO team had requested raw patient data on 174 cases that China had identified from the early phase of the outbreak in the city of Wuhan in December 2019, as well as other cases.

At the same time, Beijing has sought to cast doubt on the notion that COVID-19 originated in China, pointing to imported frozen food as a conduit. [read more]

North Korea Launches First Missiles in Nearly a Year

From Breitbart.com (Mar. 24):

North Korea launched two cruise missiles from its western coast Sunday, marking Pyongyang’s first missile test since April 2020.

The launch was seen by various analysts as a test of the Biden administration, an angry response to U.S. military drills, or the beginning of a new North Korean military exercise.

South Korean and U.S. officials said they were immediately aware of the launches but did not make them public at first, downplaying their importance. The missiles fired by North Korea did not appear to be the long-range weapons banned by U.N. Security Council resolutions.

South Korea’s Yonhap News identified the weapons on Wednesday as Kumsong-3 coastal defense missiles and said they flew about 150 miles before splashing into the East Sea – more in the direction of China than Japan, which usually has a front-row seat to the more provocative North Korean missile tests.

The North Korean military is nominally engaged in lengthy “winter drills” that last from December to March. The missile launch occurred three days after the U.S. and South Korea completed their own nine-day spring exercise, which North Korea strongly objected to, even though it was scaled down considerably to include a “minimum level” of troops and no outdoor maneuvers at all.

After ignoring the Biden administration for months, North Korea delivered a warning last week via dictator Kim Jong-un’s sister Kim Yo-jong, who warned the new White House not to “give off gunpowder smell in our land” with military drills.

“If it wants to sleep in peace for the coming four years, it had better stink at its first step,” she said. [read more]

Danish Researchers Find COVID-19 Reinfections Are Rare

From News Max.com (Mar. 23):

Danish researchers have found the vast majority of people infected with COVID-19 have immunity against reinfection for 6 months, reducing the chances by about 80% for those under the age of 65, according to a new study.

Perhaps more problematic, though, considering the dangers for the more vulnerable elderly, is past infection for those older than 65 reduces the chances of reinfection by just 47%, the study published in the journal Lancet found, The New York Times reported.

It has long been reported by scientists, COVID-19 cases are most severe and deadly for older people and those with weakened immune systems.

Scientists told the Times the reinfections are more likely to be asymptomatic or mild because of the immune response triggered by the body.

"A lot of these will be asymptomatic infections, and a lot of these will likely be people who have a blip of virus," Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York's Florian Krammer told the Times. "Eighty percent risk reduction against asymptomatic infection is great."

Among 11,068 COVID-19 positives from the first wave between March-May 2020 in the study, just 72 again tested positive September-December (0.65%) – which is compared to 3.27% who tested positive for the first time – according to the research. [read more]

Piece of Wright brothers' 1st plane now on Mars

From Live Science.com (Mar. 7):

When NASA’s Perseverance rover touched down on Mars in February, it carried a bit of the Wright brothers' first airplane with it.

A swatch of fabric from the airplane, known as the Flyer, is secured beneath the solar panels of an experimental helicopter, which in turn is strapped to the underside of the rover, according to a statement from NASA. The helicopter, called Ingenuity, is attached to the rover for now, but soon, if all goes well,  scientists will pilot the aircraft remotely over the surface of the Red Planet.

This flight will be attempted "no earlier than April 8," NASA said. The rover must first transport Ingenuity to a designated airfield and deploy the chopper; once dropped off, the helicopter must gather enough solar energy to power its internal heaters and prevent its instruments from freezing. 9 Warning Signs of Democrat Radicalization

From American Thinker.com (Oct. 12):

The United Kingdom's Home Office has a national security webpage delineating the warning signs of "radicalization," and it provides a remarkably accurate description of the political left here in America.

(1) Becoming increasingly argumentative

When was the last time Democrats looked happy about anything?  For them, we are in a perpetual state of danger and misery.  Unconscious racism taints everything in America.  Masculinity is toxic.  Carbon dioxide emissions — the very gas we exhale with each breath — guarantee the planet's doom in five or ten or twenty years' time.  Math is racist.  Merit is racist.  Working hard, owning a home, getting married, and having children are all threateningly normative.  Virtue and vice are too judgmental.  The representative image of the Democratic Party is no longer FDR or JFK; it is the indelible video clip of a young woman screaming at the sky on the day of President Trump's inauguration.

(2) Refusing to listen to differing points of view or engage with others who are different

"The science is settled," the left argues, so there is no reason to use the scientific method or cost-benefit analysis to determine whether tens of trillions of dollars in global spending is effective at fighting fluctuations in future planetary temperatures or merely effective at ceding expansive powers over every individual on Earth to international "authorities" and government bureaucrats.  Refusing to embrace socialized medicine is just evidence of racism against Barack Obama.  Refusing to elevate to the Oval Office a corrupt and congenital liar who used her position as secretary of state to enrich her own "charitable" foundation demonstrates how sexist most Americans are.  Adhering to the Constitution as written and respecting our Founding Fathers and founding documents are proof that America is both "patriarchal" and "white supremacist."  The left is no longer interested in debate — just pejorative labels.

(3) Becoming abusive to others who are different

"A basket of deplorables."  "Uneducated racists, clinging to guns and Bibles."  "The dogma lives loudly in you."  "Racism is wired into the American mind."  From the highest-ranking Democrats to the lowly foot soldiers looting and burning down small businesses throughout the country, violence and intimidation of Americans are now justified by labeling some Americans as unworthy of the protections of American law.  If you threaten strangers and destroy property in the name of Black Lives Matter or Antifa, then local Democrat prosecutors will make sure you never answer for your crimes.  If you exercise your Second Amendment right to protect the lives of your family and secure your property, those same Democrat prosecutors will threaten your liberty and future.  If you riot in the name of "justice," then you are performing a public service.  If you seek spiritual salvation by attending church or synagogue, then you are a public health threat.  When Democrats are in office, there are two tiers of justice in America, one for protecting Democrats and one for harassing Republicans.  Former attorney general Eric Holder aptly articulated this reality when he argued that the fight against Republicans is "not about principle" but about the "acquisition and use of power." [read more]

Yea, that’s pretty much the Left.  The other six warning signs:

  1. Embracing conspiracy theories
  2. Feeling persecuted
  3. Distancing from old friends and changing appearance
  4. Converting to a new religion
  5. Being secretive and reluctant to discuss activities
  6. Sympathetic to extremist ideologies and groups

White House prepares massive infrastructure bill with universal pre-K, free community college, climate measures

From The Washington Post (Mar. 22):

White House officials are preparing to present President Biden with a roughly $3 trillion infrastructure and jobs package that includes high-profile domestic policy priorities such as free community college and universal prekindergarten, according to three people familiar with internal discussions.

After completing the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package this month, Biden administration officials are piecing together the next major legislative priority. Although no final announcement has been made, the White House is expected to push a multitrillion-dollar jobs and infrastructure plan as the centerpiece of the president’s “Build Back Better” agenda.

That effort is expected to be broken into two parts — one focused on infrastructure, and the other focused on other domestic priorities such as growing the newly expanded child tax credit for several years. The people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private conversations, stressed that planning was preliminary and subject to change. Some aides said that the package’s final price tag remains unclear.

Stop Politicizing Asian American Violence

Commentary From Vik Ath on The Daily Signal.com (Mar. 22):

No words can express the sense of frustration and anger that overcame me as I watched yet another act of violence being committed toward my fellow Asian Americans. From the death of Vichar Ratanapakdee in San Francisco to the recent shootings in Atlanta, I thought to myself, when will this trend of violence end?

I couldn’t help but think of my elderly grandmother in Long Beach, California. How safe would she be going to the grocery store or just walking down the street?

She came to this country as a refugee, surviving the killing fields of Cambodia, losing her husband and three of her children to the genocide before making it to America. After surviving all those hardships, could someone take her life away here in America without cause?

As Asian Americans across the country wrestle with these same questions, I could not help but feel even more disgusted by the attempted politicization of these tragic events.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., used the hashtag #StopAsianHate to tweet out, “Hateful rhetoric including the dangerous language used by my Republican colleagues and the previous president drives the anti-[Asian American and Pacific Islander] violence we are seeing across America. We must all step up to #StopAsianHate and end these attacks once and for all.”

Asian Americans are dying across the country because of Republicans and Donald Trump? Give me a break. This type of political rhetoric does nothing to help Asian Americans across the country, and further divides Americans across ideological lines.

The left’s subversion of these attacks is tasteless and downright disrespectful to the millions of Asian Americans across the country. [read more]

The Left doesn’t really care about Asians or any minority for that matter. Minorities (and women) are just props to be used so they can increase their power.

Biden Overstepped Constitutional Authority in Revoking Keystone Pipeline Permit, States Allege in Lawsuit

From The Daily Signal.com (Mar. 18):

A group of 21 Republican state attorneys general filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday against President Joe Biden’s administration over its decision to nix the Keystone XL pipeline.

The states, led by Montana and Texas, accused Biden of overstepping his constitutional authority when he revoked the Keystone XL pipeline’s federal permit on Jan. 20 hours after entering office, in the lawsuit filed Wednesday afternoon in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

“The power to regulate foreign and interstate commerce belongs to Congress—not the President,” Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen said in a statement Wednesday. “This is another example of Joe Biden overstepping his constitutional role to the detriment of Montanans.”

“There is not even a perceived environmental benefit to his actions—his attempt to cancel the Keystone XL Pipeline is an empty virtue signal to his wealthy coastal elite donors,” Knudsen said. “It shows Biden’s contempt for rural communities in Montana and other states along the pipeline’s path that would benefit from and support the project.”

Congress never granted the president the authority to revoke the pipeline’s permit, which is a regulation of interstate and international commerce, according to the lawsuit. The U.S. Constitution gives Congress the sole power to regulate interstate and international commerce.

Further, Biden violated the rules previously set by Congress on what actions the executive branch may take regarding the Keystone pipeline, the lawsuit said.

Biden had stated that keeping the pipeline’s permit would not be consistent with his “economic and climate imperatives,” which include solving the world’s climate crisis. The complaint Wednesday argued that he couldn’t alter U.S. domestic policy with the intention of conducting foreign policy.

“The President has certain prerogatives to act on behalf of the United States in foreign affairs,” the lawsuit said. “But as far as domestic law is concerned, the President must work with and abide by the limits set by Congress—whether he likes them or not.” [read more]

Hope the attorney generals’ lawsuit wins. Biden probably doesn’t even know what the Keystone pipeline is.

Democrats ready resolution to expel Marjorie Taylor Greene from Congress

From Washington Examiner.com (Mar. 18):

Dozens of House Democrats are rallying behind a long-shot bid to expel Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from Congress.

Rep. Jimmy Gomez, a Democrat from California, plans to introduce a short resolution on Friday, which has 72 Democratic co-sponsors.

“Despite numerous efforts to reach out to House Republicans — and quite a few conversations — none of them were willing to publicly support the resolution at this time," a spokesperson for Gomez told Forbes.

A two-thirds supermajority is needed for it to succeed, which is unlikely, considering Democrats only control the lower chamber 219-211.

Greene, a freshman Republican from Georgia, was stripped of her committee assignments in February after House Democrats, along with a handful of Republicans, voted to remove her over past incendiary statements.

The congresswoman, who made headlines for introducing articles of impeachment against President Biden, reacted to news of the expulsion resolution on Twitter.

"There is nothing more threatening to Democrats than strong Republican Women!!! Democrats are trying [to] overturn the will of the People who voted for both myself and [Rep. Mariannette Miller-Meeks]," Greene said, referring to a House review that could overturn a contested Republican victory in Iowa. "House Democrats have declared war on House Republican Women!" [source]

Stupid. Then that’s the Left. Good for the freshman Republican standing her ground. She isn’t letting the crazy Left intimidate her.

The Flat-Earthers of Politics

From American Thinker.com:

In an 1877 essay entitled "The Ethics of Belief," British philosopher and mathematician William Kingdon Clifford argued that society has a "moral obligation" to believe only in what is supported by sufficient evidence. Clifford wrote, "it is wrong always, everywhere, and for anyone, to believe anything upon insufficient evidence."

In like manner then, dismissing as untrue what sufficient evidence proves to be true should also be avoided.  The problem is that in politics, progressives are like flat-earthers and embody the antithesis of the truth-seeking Clifford addressed in his centuries-old essay.

For the likes of Pelosi, Biden, Obama and Co., belief and disbelief depend solely on political expedience, not verifiable proof.  For example, the progressive left touts science while insisting that babies in the womb are incapable of feeling pain, that plastic drinking straws destroy the planet, that illegal felons contribute to society, and that gender is no longer limited to just XY and XX.  Progressives also ignore sound data in order to promote falsehoods like law enforcement indiscriminately murders Black men, the Second Amendment kills people, and Caucasian males are racist, illiterate hayseeds.

In leftist circles, evidence holds no authority over strong belief. Thus, progressives adhere to a mythical gospel whose inherency is altered based on partisan necessity. The left display what psychologists define as "cognitive immunization." Hence, it's not a COVID vaccine that needs to be fast-tracked, but a societal antidote to a virus that half the country has adopted via media inoculation, political indoctrination, and public education. California Bill Proposes Removing Cops Who Express Religious Or Conservative Beliefs

From The Federalist.com (Mar. 16):

A new bill introduced by California State Assembly Member Ash Kalra in San Jose would prohibit police officers from serving if they have used arbitrarily defined “hate speech” or are affiliated with a “hate group.”

The bill, known as the California Law Enforcement Accountability Reform Act (CLEAR Act), claims to combat “the infiltration of extremists in our law enforcement agencies” and would mandate a background check for all officers who have “exchanged racist and homophobic messages.”

Kalra claims that AB 655 is necessary to prevent “the apparent cooperation, participation, and support of some law enforcement” in the Jan. 6 Capitol breach.

The bill defines hate speech as “as advocating or supporting the denial of constitutional rights of, the genocide of, or violence towards, any group of persons based upon race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, or disability.”

Pacific Justice Institute Senior Staff Attorney Matthew McReynolds said this broad and purposefully arbitrary definition could give way for Christians and conservatives to be classified as “hateful” based on the premise of rejecting abortion or supporting Proposition 8 in California, a same-sex amendment that passed in 2008.

McReynolds also questioned how this would affect those of the Muslim faith — since many religious mosques and followers have taken a stance against homosexuality.

“Under the guise of addressing police gangs, the bill at the same time launches an inexplicable, unwarranted, and unprecedented attack on peaceable, conscientious officers who happen to hold conservative political and religious views,” wrote Reynolds. “Indeed, this is one of the most undisguised and appalling attempts we have ever seen, in more than 20 years of monitoring such legislation, on the freedom of association and freedom to choose minority viewpoints.” [read more]

This bill smacks of McCarthyism. Definitely not constitutional. Then again it’s okay if the Left does it.

Mask Mandates Do Not Save Lives

From American Thinker.com (Mar. 17):

Although some studies have concluded that masks help stop the spread of COVID-19, usually they have failed to replicate real-world situations.  A common approach is to evaluate the effectiveness of mask material at stopping the expulsion or intake of the aerosols presumed to be the airborne carriers of the virus.  Useful information, perhaps, but at this stage, what we need to know is whether the widespread use of masks is measurably reducing the risk of death from the disease.  To continue requiring the use of masks makes sense only if there is compelling data that death rates are lower for people who wear masks than it is for people who do not.

We have no way of measuring whether or how much and how appropriately individuals wear masks, but state mandates that people wear them are predicated on the notion that more people will do so if they are threatened with a fine or punishment.  Thus, it makes sense to demand that states with mask mandates have lower COVID-19 death rates than states that don't.  If states with mask mandates are not experiencing lower rates than states without them, the citizenry should insist that the burdensome policy of requiring masks be abandoned.

Logic or speculation alone cannot provide a reliable answer to the question of mask effectiveness.  Neither can the judgments and proclamations of politicians or even public health experts.  What we need is data.

The Data

At this URL, it is possible to extract Census Bureau estimates of population for individual states as of July 1, 2020.

The Centers for Disease Control maintains a website that reports the total number of people who have died from COVID-19.  Updated daily, the table provides the figures for each state and for the country as a whole.  The state figures for virus deaths were extracted from this source on or about February 16.

U.S. News and World Report published an article identifying which states have and have not mandated masks.  For those states with a mask mandate, the article tells when the mandate was put into effect.

Those three sources provided the raw data for everything that follows.  At the end of this article, I will link to a table containing all the data that were extracted from those sources to answer the question of mask effectiveness. [read more]

What is stupid is requiring people to wear a mask after they have been fully vaccinated. What’s the point? The CDC says fully vaccinated people can gather indoors without a mask. Some on the Left will ignore this advice and do what they want anyway. They love power.

Why is China Joe still wearing a mask after he has been fully vaccinated? Is this virtue signaling?

Judge Rules Michigan Secretary Of State Violated State Law With Absentee Ballot Order

From The Federalist.com (Mar. 17):

A Michigan judge ruled last week that Democratic Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson violated state law when she circumvented the legislature with unilateral orders on absentee voting.

Last year, as Democrats across the country implemented last-minute rule changes ahead of the November election, Benson issued a directive that local clerks count with a presumption of validity.

“Signature review ‘begins with the presumption that’ the signature on an absentee voter ballot application of envelope is valid,” Benson ordered in October. Only ballots signed with “multiple significant and obvious” inconsistencies ought to go under further review.

Detroit-area Judge Christopher M. Murray, however, ruled last week that Benson’s order violated the Michigan Administrative Procedures Act (APA). Murray argued Benson’s instructions were “rules” passed without following the proper procedures in place.

“A ‘rule’ not promulgated in accordance with the APA’s procedures is invalid,” Murray wrote. “An agency must utilize formal APA rulemaking procedures when establishing policies that ‘do not merely interpret or explain the statute or rules from which the agency derives its authority,’ but rather ‘establish the substantive standards implementing the program.’” [read more]
