Ann's Plan to End Police Shootings

Commentary from Ann Coulter on Town Hall.com (Apr. 28):

To use the cliché of the moment, these are deeply polarized times. But there are some issues so urgent that we must find common ground. At the top of that list is preventing police-citizen interactions from resulting in the deaths of either innocent civilians or dedicated police officers.

Unsurprisingly, Joe Biden's Justice Department is now signaling its intent to address this problem in the time-honored Democrat way -- by "investigating" local police departments, so it can then announce the foregone conclusion that "systemic racism" abounds.

The next step in that playbook is a "Consent Decree," where local police departments, under threat of crippling and endless Dickensian litigation, agree to hand over their keys to the feds. And yes, this nifty move is executed under color of law, though it's not entirely different in spirit from the way Captain Phillips lost control of his container ship on the high seas, if you happened to catch the Tom Hanks movie.

Conservatives are girding for battle. In the past, Consent Decrees have been used to kneecap police departments, compelling them to waste millions of dollars on paperwork, and focus on concerns notable for not being "Keeping the Public Safe."

Maybe in the interest of comity, we shouldn't abandon Consent Decrees so fast. So here's my stab at one. Below, I have enumerated 16 bullet points that I believe we can all agree on.

1) When motorists see flashing police lights behind them, they consent to pull over. (See what I mean? Nothing but common sense!)

2) Upon being asked for their license and registration, drivers will consent to produce those documents and not to fight with the officer, drive off or reach for a gun. (Again: Comity!)

3) As a general rule, it is advisable that drivers not engage in a game of Do I have a gun -- or is it a cellphone? with the officers, but when asked to show their hands ... well, I guess you'd say, "consent." (Beginning to see the pattern?)

4) For citizens holding the drug money for a major fentanyl ring in Louisville, Kentucky, if the police knock on your door at midnight, you consent not to shoot at the officers, but to open the door and say, "Yes, may I help you?" (Observation will reveal that this point cannot fail to produce the safe policing that we all desire.)

5) In fact, in any door-knock situation, you consent not to shoot at the police.

6) We may further strike the "in a door-knock situation" from that last point. In all circumstances, anywhere, anytime, citizens consent not to shoot at police officers.

7) While it is preferable that assailants not burst from their homes carrying 8-inch knives and screaming, "I'm gonna stab the f*ck out of you," when those circumstances arise, and responding officers have requested that the knife be put down just prior to the actual stabbing commencing, the assailant will consent. (This will be music to #BlackLivesMatter's ears, inasmuch as they believe that, you know, black lives matter.)

8) When sprinting through an alley at 2:30 in the morning holding a recently fired gun, with police in hot pursuit demanding that the suspect stop, the fleeing suspect will consent to stop.

9) If a further request is made that the suspect drop the gun, the fleeing suspect will provide his consent. (Police officers tend to be very strict about this sort of thing.)

10) Consent similarly will be given when a police officer directs pedestrians strolling in the middle of a street to use the sidewalk. [read more]

Sounds good to me. Respecting the police is always a good idea.

Chipmunks Test Positive For Bubonic Plague In California, Forcing Closures To Popular Sites

From Daily Caller.com (Aug. 3):

Officials in El Dorado County, California, announced the closure of several locations on the south shore of Lake Tahoe on Monday after chipmunks in the area had tested positive for bubonic plague.

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) is carrying out vector control treatments to the affected areas, with the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, Kiva Beach and their parking areas expected to remain closed for the public until Friday, according to The Tahoe Daily Tribune.

None of the infected animals have had contact with humans, El Dorado County spokesperson Carla Hass said Monday, The Tahoe Daily Tribune reported.

While plague cases in humans are rare, health consequences for those contracting the disease may be extremely serious. People exposed to squirrels, chipmunks and other wild rodents and their fleas are at higher risk. Those infected usually developed symptoms within two weeks after exposure, which include nausea, chills, high fever, weakness and swollen lymph nodes in the armpit, neck, or groin, according to a press release by the El Dorado County government.

“Individuals can greatly reduce their risk of becoming infected with plague by taking simple precautions, including avoiding contact with wild rodents and their fleas,” El Dorado County Public Health Officer Dr. Bob Hartmann said, according to the press release.

“Do not feed rodents in picnic or campground areas and never handle sick or dead rodents. Also, leave your pets at home when visiting areas with elevated plague risk,” Hartmann added. [source]

That doesn’t sound good. Hope the plague doesn’t spread.

The Climate Warriors Are Coming for Your Gas Heater and Stove

From National Review.com (Aug. 2):

Natural gas is a clean and affordable fuel used by millions of Americans every day to cook, heat water, and provide warm homes in the winter. We appreciate its benefits, even if we don’t think about them very often.

Just because most of us may not think about natural gas, however, doesn’t mean that the climate warriors do likewise. They think about it constantly. That includes New Mexico’s senior U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D.), who recently wrote in the New York Times that “working to electrify our vehicles, homes and businesses is a critical part of achieving economy wide net-zero emissions.”

Unfortunately, in Heinrich’s parlance, “electrification” does not mean bringing much-needed electricity to impoverished corners of our country, including the Navajo Reservation right here in New Mexico. No, the legislation he’s pushing in Congress — and the funding he’s advocating in the infrastructure bill, specifically — do nothing of the sort. By “electrification,” the senator means that he’d like federal, state, and local governments to phase out or completely ban your natural-gas stove, oven, and furnace, thus requiring you to use electric heat and stoves.

While it may seem “fringe” to many, this is a policy that could be coming to a city near you sometime soon. According to the Sierra Club, Sacramento recently became the 46th U.S. city to begin “phasing out natural gas in new buildings.” That Wall Street Journal adds, too, that “Seattle, Denver and New York have all either enacted or proposed measures to ban or discourage the use of the fossil fuel in new homes and buildings.”

Just a decade or so ago the Sierra Club and other environmental groups supported natural gas as a cleaner burning alternative to coal. Now, Senator Heinrich — counter to the economic interests of the state he represents, and against the expressed preferences of consumers who use such appliances — is pushing to eliminate natural gas in homes and businesses. In California, Newson is coming for their gas powered lawn mowers, gas powered chainsaws, etc. Basically, any equipment that is gas powered. Just so the Left can make sacrifices to the god of climate change.

Feds exempting some illegal migrants from normal ID requirements on flights

From Just the News.com (July 28):

As the Biden administration ramps up the release of illegal migrants detained at the southern border, they are exempting many from the Transportation Security Agency's government photo ID rules for airline travel, giving them special permissions to fly after a background check.

TSA officials say they are confident the screenings that U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials are doing before migrants are permitted onto U.S. domestic flights is ensuring security. But a former head of the CBP told Just the News he is not so sure.

"I'm sure CBP is doing as much due diligence as possible," said Mark Morgan, who served as acting commissioner of the agency under President Donald Trump and chief of U.S. Border Patrol and acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement under President Barack Obama. "But when you have 180,000 people crossing a month and many don't have the official travel documents normally needed to ensure identity, there is only so much you can do."

All American passengers are required to provide TSA a government-issued photo ID, usually a state-issued driver's license or a passport, Homeland Security trusted traveler card, green card or a Department of Defense ID. There are procedures when an American forgets their ID at the airport, which requires filling out extensive paperwork, waiting for ID verification and then undergoing a pat-down search according to the TSA Web site.

Officials said illegal migrants being released from detention pose additional challenges if they didn't arrive at the border with a passport or other clear government-trusted IDs. Some arrive with birth certificates issued by foreign countries or have generic IDs that don't carry the same weight as a passport or driver's license. [read more]

Not requiring ID on flights or illegals? Yea, that’ll be okay.

How Intelligent Is Our Intelligence Community, Really?

From Patricia M. McClane on American Thinker.com (July 26):

The Conservative Treehouse began a series on "The Fourth Branch of Government, the Intelligence Community."  That series, along with Tucker Carlson's revelation that the NSA possibly spied on him and at the very least illegally unmasked him, has brought the Intelligence Community center stage.  I usually do not think too much about the various security and intelligence functions of the government, other than to marvel that they have managed to prevent a second 9/11.  In doing a bit of research, however, I have come to realize that the security function of our country is a tangled web of bureaucracy.  Is that really what it takes to protect U.S. citizens, or is this a turf-building and protection operation?

The foundation of any security operation has to be the knowledge that is gathered and analyzed.  In the case of the federal government, that foundation is provided by the Intelligence Community, or I.C., which is "responsible for collecting, analyzing, and delivering foreign intelligence and counterintelligence information to America's leaders so they can make sound decisions to protect our country."  The I.C. is a coalition of 18 entities with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) integrating the intelligence gathered; however, the members do not report to the ODNI.  The ODNI is a relatively new entity, created in 2005 at the recommendation of the 9/11 commission.  The commission reported that before the 2001 disaster, there were clues about an impending attack, but no one person had a full picture because information was siloed.  In typical bureaucratic fashion, the response was to create another level of infrastructure and expand government operations.

………………..

There appears to be an abundance of duplication and overlap.  With the exception of the National Reconnaissance Office, the members seem to do the same thing — collect and analyze intelligence for various end-users.  Is it really necessary to have a Defense Intelligence Agency as well as a separate division within each of the military branches?  Why do some Cabinet departments have their own intelligence-gathering units but not others?  Does the State Department not trust the work produced by the CIA and FBI?  Maybe the Department of Commerce doesn't need an intelligence-gathering arm for its work but why does the Treasury require its own operation?  There is a whole Cabinet-level agency called the Department of Homeland Security.  Wouldn't you expect to find the intelligence-gathering work being done within the walls of DHS?  Well, they do have an Office of Intelligence and Analysis, but how is that at all different from the work the Treasury Department's Office of Information and Analysis is doing?  Maybe they just don't have as much time to pay attention to intelligence since DHS also has to take care of natural disasters that require a FEMA response and supervise the Coast Guard, which, by the way, has its own department for intelligence. The 'Fourth Turning Crisis' Has Arrived

From American Thinker.com (May 29):

Sweeping social transformations occur during times of crisis.  We are in such a predicament now, and transformative change may be coming to America whether we want it or not.  It could define who we are as a nation for the remainder of the 21st Century.  Whether America reaffirms itself as a beacon for freedom for the world or whether we become just another plot of ground in the new world order remains to be seen.  The consequences for all Americans could be enormous, and especially so for Millennials.

What crisis are we in, you ask? Well, consider the staggering debt and economic collapse that is looming.  Confrontation and possible war with China is looming as well.  The pandemic has and is still wreaking havoc on our way of life.  Big Tech and Big Media are restricting free speech and fixing elections with the compliance of the administrative state in Washington.  The border is being overrun.  Schools no longer teach our history or what it is to be an American.  At the head of it all is Joe Biden and his merry band of race-baiting socialists purposely driving this runaway train off the tracks.  And in the end, societal collapse and a great reset into a Marxist world government await our demise.

So yes, we are in a crisis where the future of our way of life hangs in the balance.

In their seminal 1997 book, The Fourth Turning: An American Prophecy, William Strauss and Neil Howe surveyed history through a generational prism.  Their chronicle forms Anglo-American history into seven recurring sequences over the past 500 years.  The authors make a weighty claim that generational characteristics follow a similar series of generational phases, or turnings, that climax in a major crisis every 80 years or so.

In their book, each cycle is characterized by the First Turning or the High (which most recently occurred from 1946 to 1964); followed by the Second Turning or the Awakening (1964-1984); then the Third Turning or the Unraveling (1984-2008); and finally, the Fourth Turning or the Crisis (2008 to late 2020s).  Each generation comes of age during a different time and views the world differently.  The Greatest Generation viewed the world differently than the Silent Generation, who viewed it differently than the Baby Boomers, Gen Xers, Millennials, etc.

The last historical crisis we faced was the Depression and World War II, where The Greatest Generation was forged.  These trials brought about significant changes to the entire world, and especially to the Greatest Generation.  We are now 80 years past that crisis, and it now appears the nation has entered into another time of tribulation. New EU Alert: Having A Sense Of Humor Is Proof You Might Be A Far-Right Terrorist

From The Federalist.com (July 27):

The European Union (EU) released a non-satirical report this week offering that humor, including the sharing of memes, could be a sign your peer is a “far-right extremist.”

In partnership with the Radicalization Awareness Network, an EU-funded group involved with “countering violent extremism” through “surveillance and security,” the European Commission published an 18-page report titled “It’s not funny anymore. Far-right extremists’ use of humour.”

“Humour has become a central weapon of extremist movements to subvert open societies and to lower the threshold towards violence,” the report states. “Especially within the context of a recent wave of far-right terrorist attacks, we witness ‘playful’ ways in communicating racist ideologies. …This paper scrutinizes how humour functions as a potential factor in terms of influencing far-right extremist violence.”

In block quotes on page 5 of the report, it states that “The most potent weapons known to mankind are satire and ridicule.” [read more]

Climate Scientist Warns ‘Next 20-30 Years Will Be Cold’

From Breitbart.com (July 28):

Climate scientist Dr. Willie Soon has urged his fellow academics to pay closer attention to the sun’s activity, which suggests several decades of global cooling rather than warming.

Speaking this week with Alex Newman of the New American, Soon, a Malaysian astrophysicist and aerospace engineer, said that “what we predict is that the next 20-30 years will be cold. It will be cold, so it will be a very interesting thing for the IPCC to confront.”

The sun is in a “weakened state” and far less active than during the 1980s and 1990s, Soon noted, which should last until “around 2050.”

“The whole climate system is powered 99.1 percent by the sun’s energy,” he stated.

Soon, a researcher at the Solar and Stellar Physics Division of the Harvard–Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said that global cooling is a far greater source of concern than global warming.

“We will have a lot more problems were the planet to cool rather than warm,” Soon insisted.

Humanity can solve a lot of problems including overheating, but the problem of a “little ice age” like that of the 1700s, “those problems are much harder to solve,” he said.

“If you want to face a serious problem, worry about an ice age; never worry about global warming,” he declared. [read more]

China's Weaponized Fishing Fleet

From American Thinker.com (July 25):

Japan started recording derelict North Korean fishing vessels washing ashore in 2011, according to reporting by CNN’s Hilary Whiteman and Mairi Mackay.  Since then, 63 on average of the "ghost ships" have annually come ashore. Most are empty, but some contain dead bodies and occasionally a skeletal crew. Generally, the ships are old, underpowered, and lacking GPS.

Initially, authorities assumed the vessels belonged to crews who were trying to defect from North Korea. Or "climate change" had caused the squids to move away from North Korean shores forcing the fishermen to travel dangerously far out to sea, where they died from exposure.

But by using satellite data, a team of researchers from the conservation group Global Fishing Watch pieced together the most likely explanation, as reported in last year's NBC article  "Ghost Ships":

China is sending a previously invisible armada of industrial boats to illegally fish in North Korean waters, violently displacing smaller North Korean boats and spearheading a decline in once-abundant squid stocks of more than 70 percent.

In March 2020, the United Nations received anonymous reports from two separate nations alerting them to illegal Chinese fishing within North Korea's exclusive economic zone. The statements included testimonies from a Chinese crew confirming their government knew of the illegal fishing in North Korean waters.

The Chinese fleet operating in those waters became known as the "Dark Fleet" because they often turned off their transponders when entering North Korean waters, hiding them from land-based authorities for months. [read more]

A New TOTALLY RESISTANT STRAIN Has Been Found In Asia!

From The Patriot Nation.net (July 24):

A dangerous fungus that was first identified in Asia was found in two cities, Washington DC and Dallas, Texas.

The said newly identified fungus is reportedly resistant to all drugs.

Hospitals and patients are in danger once this fungus reaches them. And when it enters the bloodstream it can be very deadly.

Here’s an excerpt from Stat News report:

For the first time, researchers have reported cases of people carrying or infected with strains of the dangerous fungus Candida Auris that were resistant to all classes of antifungal drugs before any treatment, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. The agency also reported evidence of some transmission of the strains within health facilities.

Candida Auris, or C. Auris, which was first seen in 2009, has been highly resistant to the few available treatment options for several years, leaving people who treat and study fungal diseases concerned about the toll this superbug could take, particularly on severely ill patients. That there are now so-called pan-resistant cases in people who had never been treated with antifungal drugs is particularly unnerving, experts said.

The CDC reported on five cases, three in Washington, D.C., and two in Texas. In both locations, the cases were clustered within facilities. The facilities were not identified, but the fungus is most commonly diagnosed in very sick people who are in specialized long-term facilities.

And according to the CDC report:

Candida Auris is an emerging fungus that presents a serious global health threat. CDC is concerned about C. Auris for three main reasons:

  1. It is often multidrug-resistant, meaning that it is resistant to multiple antifungal drugs commonly used to treat Candida infections. Some strains are resistant to all three available classes of antifungals.

  2. It is difficult to identify with standard laboratory methods, and it can be misidentified in labs without specific technology. Misidentification may lead to inappropriate management.

  3. It has caused outbreaks in healthcare settings. For this reason, it is important to quickly identify C. Auris in a hospitalized patient so that healthcare facilities can take special precautions to stop its spread.

First Covid, now this bacteria? This bacteria sounds far more dangerous. Wait for the Left ruling class to hear this news. Another excuse for a lock down.

Three Scientific Discoveries that Call for a God Hypothesis

From Breakpoint.org:

In the book River Out of Eden, Oxford biologist and atheist superstar Richard Dawkins famously wrote:

“The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference.”

Dawkins and other “new atheists” have long insisted that science has excluded the possibility of a creator or has, at least, rendered it unnecessary. Turns out this belief may be scientifically out of date. According to a new book, the biggest discoveries of the last century challenge a materialistic worldview and call science back to its theistic roots.

Cambridge-educated philosopher of science Stephen Meyer wrote two books, Signature in the Cell and Darwin’s Doubt, that both argue against materialist accounts of biology. His latest book, The Return of the God Hypothesis, makes an even more ambitious claim.

Three key twentieth century discoveries, argues Meyer, challenge materialist assumptions and point, not just to an intelligent designer, but to a transcendent God. He recently joined my colleague Shane Morris on the Upstream podcast to talk about the book.

Not only were most of the founders of modern science devout Christians, the scientific method itself emerged from assumptions found only in a Christian worldview, such as the intelligibility of nature and the need to constantly test our fallen intuitions against the facts. Tracing science from its theistic beginnings, Meyer shows how it gradually lost its way and became tethered to materialism.

Famed scientists like Laplace, Hume, and Darwin came to believe that the “God hypothesis” was no longer necessary to explain the natural world, that the universe required no cause beyond itself. Given the opportunity and enough time, living things could arise and evolve on their own. Since the conditions for life were simple and the universe had existed from eternity, here we are.

These assumptions went largely unchallenged until the twentieth century. However, breakthroughs in astronomy, physics, and biology began to undermine materialism.  For example, telescopes began to challenge the proponents (Einstein being one) of a steady-state universe. More and more evidence mounted that the universe was, in fact, not eternal, as many scientists had long assumed. If instead the universe came into being at some point in time, it must have had a cause outside of itself, To be clear, there must be a cause outside of space, time, matter, and energy.

Another discovery was how finely tuned the universe is. The very laws that govern the cosmos, such as gravity, electromagnetism, nuclear forces, and the cosmological constant, are precisely calibrated in such a way that makes life possible. There’s not a compelling way to explain this “Goldilocks universe,” one “just right” that could have been otherwise, within a naturalistic worldview. As English astronomer and former atheist Fred Hoyle put it, “A common sense interpretation of the facts suggests that a super-intellect has monkeyed with physics…” [read more]

5 Things That Should Be on Agenda for US-Russia Strategic Stability Dialogue

From The Daily Signal.com (July 27):

The United States and Russia on Wednesday will hold the first round of a Strategic Stability Dialogue in Geneva. Talks of this type will be the first in about a year—and the first for the Biden administration.

The meeting will focus on reducing the risk of nuclear war and on arms control. How the United States approaches those talks will be an important indicator of the White House’s posture toward the Kremlin moving forward.

It’s critical that Team Biden gets it right.

Unfortunately, the talks come at an extraordinarily difficult time in U.S.-Russian relations. Some would even say that bilateral ties are at a post-Cold War low. For instance, Washington and Moscow remain at odds over Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its support of the ongoing insurgency in the eastern part of Ukraine.

……….

The point is that relations are very rocky, but the Biden administration must, at minimum, still make the following difficult points:

  • Missile Defense: U.S. missile defense isn’t on the table for negotiation. While it doesn’t affect Russia’s nuclear deterrent, the Kremlin hates it. In light of growing missile threats (Iran, North Korea, etc.), we’re entitled to our right of self-defense, which missile defense increasingly provides.
  • China’s Buildup: Beijing is involved in an unprecedented—some have said “breathtaking”—nuclear buildup. According to some estimates, it’s possible China could have as many operational warheads as the U.S. and Russia in the coming decade. It must be brought into strategic arms control talks.
  • “Exotic” Weapons: Russia is developing and deploying a slew of nontraditional nuclear weapons, from intercontinental ballistic missile-launched hypersonic weapons to unlimited-range cruise missiles to intercontinental torpedoes that may be unconstrained by any treaty or agreement. The question: How do these novel weapons fit into existing U.S.-Russian arms control?
  • Tactical Nukes: Moscow has significant advantages in low-yield, “battlefield” nuclear weapons in Europe. These weapons must be brought into arms control negotiations, especially considering Russia’s potential strategy to employ these weapons in an attempt to win a future conflict in Europe.
  • Chemical Weapons: Russia’s use of the nerve agent Novichok against Navalny is evidence of the existence of a Russian offensive chemical weapons program—and a violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention. Moscow must end this program and come back into compliance with that multilateral treaty.

Of course, considering the state of U.S.-Russia relations, we should keep our expectations for “progress” on those and other issues low. A thin gruel of a photo-op and a joint statement may be all we get.

But the opportunity for substantive dialogue is important. At this moment, more predictability, stability, and communications would be welcome in U.S.-Russian relations. [read more]

The FBI Is Out of Control, The Light of Truth Will Destroy This Darkness

Commentary From Larry Johnson on The Gateway Pundit.com (July 22):

I used to respect the FBI. When I worked at the State Department’s Office of Counter Terrorism, I was one of two officers who handled liaison with the FBI on its investigation of the 1988 terrorist bombing of Pan Am 103. My supervisor and I sent out the cables to our Embassies requesting permission for FBI Agents to go to those countries to collect evidence and pursue leads. Ambassador Morris Busby, who headed up the Office of the Coordinator for Counter Terrorism (it is now known as the Bureau for Counter Terrorism) in 1990 put me in charge of advertising the Terrorism Rewards Program and I developed the public service ads, with the help of Diplomatic Security, that launched “Are You the Next Hero?”

…………….

Today’s FBI is a nightmare. They have turned the FBI into a political force akin to the East German Stasi and the Nazi’s Gestapo. Instead of protecting American citizens they are spying on patriots and launching groundless cases, such as the bullshit charges brought against DEA Agent Mark Ibrahim:

Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Mark Ibrahim became the first member of federal law enforcement to be charged in connection with the insurrection at the Capitol on Jan. 6.

Ibrahim, of Orange County, California, is facing felony charges of entering a restricted building and area with a weapon, carrying a firearm on the grounds of the Capitol and lying to investigators from the Office of the Inspector General.

While the affidavit states Ibrahim didn’t actually enter the Capitol building, the affidavit includes a photo of Ibrahim inside the first set of fencing and barricades that surrounded the Capitol before the crowd broke through and alleges Ibrahim was on Capitol grounds that day.

Not only did Ibrahim not enter the Capitol, he was there with his brother, who is an FBI Agent. But he also was there with a “friend” who, it turns out, was an FBI informant. That FBI informant was encouraging Ibrahim to go inside. Ibrahim did not. But the fact that he did not incite violence or engage in any act of violence is ignored by the ironically named U.S. Department of Justice. They want to make an example of him.

……………

I will make this very simple. Do not trust the FBI. Do not help the FBI. Do not cooperate with the FBI. If you must talk with someone from the FBI only do so with an attorney present.

There are still some good men and women in the FBI who are patriots. But the leadership is corrupt. If you are involved in organizing to peacefully resist this oppression be cautious of any member of your group who is encouraging you to act unlawfully. [read more]

Democrats’ Bill Would Hold Facebook, Other Social Media Liable for ‘Health Misinformation’

From The Daily Signal.com (July 23):

Senate Democrats introduced legislation Thursday removing liability protections from online platforms that promote content deemed health misinformation.

The bill, proposed by Sens. Amy Klobuchar and Ben Ray Lujan, seeks to carve out an exception from Section 230 liability shields enjoyed by online platforms, such as Facebook or YouTube, if those platforms boost content classified as health misinformation, Vox first reported.

The legislation, known as the Health Misinformation Act, directs the Department of Health and Human Services to create a definition of health misinformation, and strips liability protections from platforms “if the provider promotes that health misinformation through an algorithm used by the provider.”

HHS defined health misinformation in an advisory last week as “information that is false, inaccurate, or misleading according to the best available evidence.”

The bill does allow for “neutral” boosting of misinformation, such as through “chronological functionality,” in which newer content is promoted to users.

“For far too long, online platforms have not done enough to protect the health of Americans,” Klobuchar said in a statement to Vox. “These are some of the biggest, richest companies in the world, and they must do more to prevent the spread of deadly vaccine misinformation.”

Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act states, “No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider,” shielding online companies such as Facebook from liability for content posted by users.

By creating an exception for health misinformation, the bill would permit tech companies to be sued over content boosted on their platforms. [read more]

The question is how does the powers-that-be define “health misinformation?” Possibly if the info. doesn’t match the Ruling Class’ narrative? Just asking.

Mississippi attorney general asks Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade

From Washington Examiner.com (July 22):

Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch asked the Supreme Court to overturn the landmark 1973 decision Roe v. Wade that legalized abortion nationwide, calling the ruling "egregiously wrong."

“Under the Constitution, may a State prohibit elective abortions before viability? Yes. Why? Because nothing in constitutional text, structure, history, or tradition supports a right to abortion," Fitch wrote in a brief filed to the court on Thursday.

The request pertains to Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization involving a 2018 Mississippi law that would ban abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, with narrow exceptions for medical emergencies. The law was blocked in lower courts before it could take effect, and the Supreme Court announced in May it would take the case to decide “whether all pre-viability prohibitions on elective abortions are unconstitutional."

Court precedent, first established with the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision and reaffirmed in the 1992 Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey decision, is that there is a right to legal abortion before the fetus reaches the gestational age at which it's likely to survive outside the womb.

The conservative-majority Supreme Court has the power to throw out that law in its next term.

“There are those who would like to believe that Roe v. Wade settled the issue of abortion once and for all. But all it did was establish a special-rules regime for abortion jurisprudence that has left these cases out of step with ... neutral principles of law applied by the Court,” Fitch said. "Artificial guideposts have stunted important public debate on how we, as a society, care for the dignity of women and their children. It is time for the Court to set this right and return this political debate to the political branches of government.” [read more]

It probably won’t happen, but the attorney general had to try. The abortion decision should go back to the states anyway.

Affluence + Secularism = Boredom = Leftism

Commentary From Dennis Prager on Town Hall.com (April 27):

Just as physicists look for equations to explain the natural world, I have always thought it useful to look for equations to explain human nature. For example, in my book on happiness, I offer this equation: U = I - R. Unhappiness = Image - Reality. The difference between the images we have for our life and the reality of our life is one way of measuring how much unhappiness we experience.

Here, I offer another theorem, this time to help explain leftism.

A + S = B = L

Affluence + Secularism = Boredom = Leftism

The search for an equation to help explain leftism (as distinguished from traditional liberalism) emanates from these facts:

Most leftists come from the upper and upper-middle class. This was true for the two founders of leftism, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. Marx* was supported by his family and by Engels, who was a wealthy businessman and the son of a very wealthy businessman. All the Western spies for the Soviet Union were economically secure. And the great funder of radical causes today is a billionaire -- George Soros.

Nearly all leftists are irreligious people. And the breeding place of leftism, the university, is the most secular institution in modern society.

These two facts produce a problem: Many people lack meaning in their lives. And lack of meaning is another way of stating "boredom" -- a boredom of the soul.

People need meaning. After food, that is the greatest human need. As important as sex is, there are happy people who go without sex (loss of a partner, never having found a partner, vows of chastity), but there are no happy people who go without meaning (no matter how much sex they have).

This need for meaning has traditionally been met by four things: religion, family, providing for oneself and one's family, and patriotism. And all are fading. [read more]

Prager might be right. He makes a good case.

*Marx also had warts and boils all over his body because he never bathed. That could be a sign of mental illness.

Wikipedia's Own Co-Founder Warns His Site Is Compromised by Leftists and Can't Be Trusted

From Red State.com (July 21):

For years, Wikipedia has been a source of quick and dirty knowledge about any given subject under the sun, but over time it’s become a leftist propaganda site where reality is whatever the leftist volunteers editing the site want it to be.

This isn’t just an opinion. This is coming straight from the mouth of Wikipedia’s own co-creator who is now sounding the alarm on the fact that his own site is now compromised by uncompromising leftists who are erasing anything and altering everything that is inconvenient to the left’s narrative.

According to the Daily Mail, Wikipedia co-creator Larry Sanger appeared on the “UnHeard” podcast to discuss the site’s descent from a crowdsourced online encyclopedia to a leftist propaganda site:

Larry Sanger, 53, co-founded Wikipedia in 2001 alongside Jimmy Wales, said the crowdsourcing project has betrayed its original mission by reflecting the views of the ‘establishment.’

He said he agreed with the assessment that ‘teams of Democratic-leaning volunteers’ remove content that isn’t to their liking, including information about scandals linked to President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter Biden.

When asked by Unherd.com if Wikipedia can be trusted, he replied: ‘You can trust it to give a reliably establishment point of view on pretty much everything.

Sanger talked, in particular, about Joe Biden’s entry which has been altered to be a sterile and entirely leftist view of Biden, including no GOP-esque perspectives:

‘The Biden article, if you look at it, has very little by way of the concerns that Republicans have had about him,’ Sanger said.

‘So if you want to have anything remotely resembling the Republican point of view about Biden, you’re not going to get it from the article.

‘And there is a paragraph – and it is quite a long article so there should be at least a paragraph – about the Ukraine scandal.

‘Very little of that can be found in Wikipedia.’

Sanger added: ‘What little can be found is extremely biased and reads like a defense counsel’s brief, really.’

Indeed, the Wikipedia entry on Biden even has defensive language in favor of Biden and offensive language against Donald Trump with a passage that reads, in part, “Trump and his allies falsely accused Biden of getting the Ukrainian prosecutor general Viktor Shokin fired because he was supposedly pursuing an investigation into Burisma Holdings, which employed Hunter Biden.” [read more]

That’s a shame, really. I only mainly use it to look up musician info. or a list of novels from a writer.

Politico: Rudy Giuliani Banned by Fox News

From News Max.com (Sept. 24):

Rudy Giuliani has been banned from appearing on Fox News for several months, and only learned of the "from the top" order on the eve of the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Son Andrew Giuliani, a New York gubernatorial candidate, has also been banned.

And former NYPD Commissioner Bernie Kerik, a close adviser to Giuliani, is rarely booked on Fox News, Politico Playbook reports.

Rudy Giuliani and Kerik were prominent New York City leaders on 9/11 as mayor and NYPD commissioner.

"They're not doing us any favors," a Trump aide told Politico.

The rejection on hosting the Giulianis "comes from the top," sources told Politico. [read more]

Not sure what’s going on with Fox News lately. Not only Rudy Giuliani was banned so was his son, Andrew. It almost sounds like a family vendetta. Both men appear on News Max TV. Dick Morris was banned from Fox News a long time ago because he got first Obama presidential election wrong. Now he's got his own show on the television network News Max.

Hillsdale College Releases 1776 Curriculum In Hopes Of Pursuing Truth About American History

From The Federalist.com (July 21):

Hillsdale College is a small institution with lofty values: “Goodness, Truth, and Beauty.” Now, the college is expanding its pursuit of the truth to grade schools with an American history curriculum for grades K-12, “offered for free to all who wish to learn.”

“This curriculum is a work of education,” Hillsdale College President Larry P. Arnn said. “It seeks to teach the truth of American history and to cultivate in students the knowledge and virtue necessary to live good lives as citizens.”

The curriculum is a response to the now de-commissioned 1776 Commission, which called for an honest restoration of American history. Arnn chaired the commission and Matthew Spalding, vice president of Hillsdale’s Van Andel Graduate School of Government in Washington, D.C., served as its executive director.

Created to secure and celebrate founding principles found in the Declaration of Independence, the 1776 Commission was de-funded on President Joe Biden’s first day in office for a small note in its appendix that deemed identity politics “fundamentally incompatible with the principle of equality enshrined in the Declaration of Independence.” [read more]

‘Death To The Dictator’: Iranians Take To Streets In Anti-Regime Protests

From Daily Wire.com (July 19):

Iranians are protesting against their nation’s Islamic government.

For the past several weeks, Iran has experienced worsening energy and water shortages. As the BBC reported, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the outages earlier this month: “I apologize to our dear people who have faced problems and suffering in the past few days and I urge them to cooperate [by cutting their electricity use]. People complain about power outages and they are right.” [read more]

Good for them. Although protesting in a dictatorship is far more dangerous than protesting in a democracy.

The Coming Modern Grand Solar Minimum

Commentary From Anony Mee on American Thinker.com (April 20):

I wrote last week about the coming Grand Solar Minimum, something that will have much more impact on the environment than anything we puny humans can do. It generated a lot of interest from all sides, so it’s time to delve deeper into what we can expect.

Starting with the hype: During the last grand solar minimum (GSM), the Maunder Minimum of 1645 to 1715, glaciers advanced, rivers froze, sea ice expanded -- in short, the Little Ice Age. Is another one is almost upon us?

Probably not. Maunder occurred at the tail end of a bi-millennial cycle. These cycles range between 2,000 and 2,600 years in length and see the Earth first warm, then cool. Gradual cooling had been going on for hundreds of years. Maunder just capped it off. Today we are a few hundred years into the warming phase of the subsequent bi-millennial cycle. Different starting conditions yield different paths.

The progressives say that we’re so deep into anthropogenically accelerated climate change (AACC) that there’s almost no time left to turn things around. If we don’t act now, it will be too late.

Nope, sorry squad members. What we can predict, instead, is an overall temperature reduction of 1 degree Centigrade by the end of the GSM. Afterward, natural warming at the rate of around 0.5 C. every hundred years will continue for the next 600 years or so.

That gives us a good 35 to 50 years to hone the science and come up with the best ways to mitigate the impact of unstoppable global warming on humankind; until, that is, it naturally reverses. See suggestions below for better uses of funding currently earmarked to address the “climate crisis.”

Reasonably speaking: We’ve been warming, so the cooling of the GSM will just even us out for a while. Therefore, nothing to worry about, right?

Well, not quite. There are a few worries. Plants grow in response to warmth, moisture, nutrients, and most importantly sunlight. Even if the temperature does not plunge to glacial depths, some cooling will take place and clouds are expected to grow denser and cover much of the earth’s surface as this GSM bottoms out. If normally-correlating volcanism takes place, the additional material in the atmosphere will further darken the globe and provide even more opportunity for condensation and cloud formation.
